Nicholas Hoult Joins HBO’s Harry Potter Series as Gilderoy Lockhart for Season 2

Nicholas Hoult is officially heading to Hogwarts.

The British actor, 36, has joined HBO’s highly anticipated Harry Potter television series and will take on the role of Gilderoy Lockhart beginning in the show’s second season.

HBO Max confirmed the casting in an Instagram announcement on Tuesday, Aug. 11, adding another major Hollywood name to the rapidly expanding ensemble behind the new adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s fantasy novels.

Lockhart becomes a particularly important character during Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the second installment in Rowling’s seven-book series.

The flamboyant wizard previously appeared on the big screen in the 2002 film adaptation, where he was portrayed by Kenneth Branagh.

Now, more than two decades later, Hoult will offer a new interpretation of one of Hogwarts’ most memorable professors.

In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Lockhart arrives at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry as the school’s newest Defense Against the Dark Arts professor.

Long before entering the classroom, however, Lockhart has already established himself as a celebrity throughout the wizarding world.

Veteran actor John Lithgow has been cast as Professor Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts.

Janet McTeer will portray Professor Minerva McGonagall, while Johnny Flynn has been selected to play Lucius Malfoy.

At the center of the series are three young actors stepping into some of the most recognizable roles in modern fantasy.

Dominic McLaughlin stars as Harry Potter, Alastair Stout plays Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton portrays Hermione Granger.

The trio follows Radcliffe, Grint and Watson, whose performances in the eight original movies became closely associated with the characters around the world.

Rather than attempting to recreate the film franchise exactly, the television version is expected to revisit the books across a longer episodic format.

Production on the ambitious project officially began in July 2025.

Daniel Radcliffe Is Ready to Watch the New Generation

One person who does not expect to appear in the reboot is Daniel Radcliffe.

Radcliffe played Harry Potter throughout the original movie series, beginning with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and continuing through Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2.

When asked about HBO’s adaptation in 2024, the actor made clear that he was looking forward to experiencing the new version as a viewer rather than returning to the franchise himself.

“Like the rest of the world, [I’m] very excited to watch as an audience member,” Radcliffe told E! News in May 2024.

Asked whether performers from the original movies might make appearances, Radcliffe expressed uncertainty.

“I don’t know if it would work to have us do anything in it,” he said.

His comments reflected the significant challenge facing the television adaptation: introducing a new cast while telling a story that millions of viewers already associate with the original actors.

The Creative Team Behind the Reboot

HBO announced in June 2024 that Francesca Gardiner would serve as writer and executive producer on the new series.

Gardiner brings experience from several acclaimed television productions.

Her previous credits include HBO’s award-winning drama Succession, the thriller Killing Eve and the fantasy series His Dark Materials.

She is joined by director and executive producer Mark Mylod.

Mylod also worked extensively on Succession, directing numerous episodes of the series and earning two Emmy Awards for his work.

His film credits include the 2022 dark comedy thriller The Menu.

The Harry Potter television series is being produced in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television.

J.K. Rowling is also involved with the production as an executive producer.

Rowling’s Continued Involvement Has Drawn Attention

Rowling’s participation in the new adaptation comes amid continuing controversy surrounding statements she has made about transgender issues.

Since 2020, the author has repeatedly faced criticism for remarks that critics and LGBTQ+ advocates have described as anti-transgender.

Several performers associated with the original Harry Potter movies, including Daniel Radcliffe, have publicly expressed disagreement with her views.

Rowling has denied that she is transphobic and has characterized her position as being focused on women’s rights.

Despite the ongoing public debate surrounding her comments, she remains closely involved with HBO’s adaptation of the books she created.

Hoult Adds Another Major Franchise to His Career

For Nicholas Hoult, joining Harry Potter continues a remarkable period in a career that has increasingly included major franchise roles.

Hoult recently portrayed Lex Luthor in James Gunn’s Superman, bringing a new version of the famous DC villain to the screen.

He is also set to return as Luthor in the sequel Man of Tomorrow.

His upcoming projects additionally include How to Rob a Bank, scheduled for release on Nov. 13.
