John Oliver Goes Viral for Hilarious Days of Our Lives Wig He Brought From Home

John Oliver is officially entering the dramatic world of daytime television — and he is bringing a surprisingly personal piece of wardrobe with him.

The Last Week Tonight host, 49, is making a three-episode guest appearance on the long-running soap opera Days of Our Lives, where he will play a character with the appropriately extravagant name Devlin St. John.

But before fans even get to see exactly what Devlin brings to the fictional town of Salem, one detail from Oliver’s transformation has already attracted plenty of attention: his hair.

In a preview that aired on Friday, Aug. 7, Oliver appeared wearing a shaggy, dark-colored wig that gives him a dramatically different appearance from the neatly styled look audiences usually see on his HBO comedy series.

The funniest part?

According to reports, the wig did not come from the Days of Our Lives costume department.

Oliver apparently brought it from home.

Meet Devlin St. John

Oliver will portray Devlin St. John, the chief water inspector for Salem, the fictional setting where Days of Our Lives has unfolded for decades.

The preview shows Devlin arriving at the home of Paulina Price, played by longtime television star Jackée Harry.

Oliver appears at the door sporting his oversized dark wig, immediately signaling that Devlin is not intended to look much like the comedian audiences know from Last Week Tonight.

Speaking to Access Hollywood, Oliver joked that his ordinary hairstyle simply would not be sufficient for a character with such an elaborate identity.

“Devlin St. John is writing checks that my regular hair can’t cash — however, this cashes it in for me,” he said while pointing to the wig.

The line perfectly captured the absurdity of the transformation.

A character named Devlin St. John apparently required more than a suit and a serious expression.

He needed hair capable of matching the name.

The Wig Actually Belonged to Oliver

According to Vulture, Oliver personally brought the wig to the set.

The Days of Our Lives hair-and-makeup department then made adjustments so that it would work properly on camera.

That detail quickly became one of the most amusing stories surrounding his appearance.

Celebrity guest stars normally arrive on a television set and allow the production’s wardrobe and makeup departments to create their characters.

Oliver apparently arrived with at least part of his own transformation already planned.

It also reflects how seriously — and unseriously — he approached the opportunity.

Oliver had openly campaigned for a role in daytime television, but once he received one, he clearly wanted to embrace the heightened theatricality of the genre.

The wig became part of that joke.

Producers Had to Find a Way to Put Him Into the Show

Oliver’s hairstyle was not the only unusual challenge surrounding his guest appearance.

The production team also had to figure out how to insert him into a show that films episodes far in advance.

Executive producer Ken Corday told Vulture that many of the relevant Days of Our Lives episodes had already been written and shot the previous summer.

That meant the production could not simply create a normal storyline and begin filming Oliver alongside the rest of the cast.

Instead, producers effectively had to work backward.

Corday explained that they “lifted” portions of previously produced episodes and found a way to incorporate Oliver into them.

“We basically had to shoehorn him into our schedule because we were so far ahead,” Corday said.

Despite the logistical complications, Corday said the opportunity was simply too appealing to ignore.

“It was basically, ‘We have to do this; let’s get it done.’ And we did,” he explained. “He was too good to pass up.”

Oliver Had Publicly Asked for a Soap Opera Role

Oliver’s appearance did not come completely out of nowhere.

In March, the comedian used Last Week Tonight to publicly express his desire to appear on a daytime television series.

But Oliver had some rules.

He did not want to simply make a cameo as himself.

He wanted an actual character.

And more importantly, he wanted that character to have what he described as a ridiculous name.

Days of Our Lives appears to have understood the assignment perfectly.

“Devlin St. John” sounds exactly like the kind of name that could belong to a mysterious businessman, forgotten relative, secret aristocrat or suspicious government official in a soap opera universe.

Instead, he is Salem’s chief water inspector.

That contrast only makes the character more appropriate for Oliver’s comedic sensibility.

This Isn’t His First Soap Opera Appearance

Days of Our Lives is actually the second daytime drama to fulfill Oliver’s unusual television wish this summer.

In July, he appeared on General Hospital.

There, Oliver played a very different character — a high-ranking official from the fictional World Security Bureau known simply as “Z.”

For the General Hospital appearance, Oliver once again underwent a striking makeover.

His hair was dyed jet black, and he wore a dark suit that gave him the appearance of a far more intimidating government figure than viewers normally associate with the comedian.

The cameo even allowed him to fire a gun.

That role offered Oliver nearly everything he had requested: a fictional identity, a dramatic storyline and an opportunity to behave nothing like the sarcastic host who spends his Sunday nights dissecting politics and current events.

His experience apparently only increased his enthusiasm for daytime television.

Speaking to Access Hollywood about his recent soap appearances, Oliver described the experience simply.

“It is a dream come true.”

Why Daytime Television Fits Oliver’s Comedy So Well

Oliver’s fascination with soap operas makes sense given his comedic style.

Daytime dramas operate according to their own heightened logic.

Characters return from the dead.

Secret relatives appear unexpectedly.

Long-lost children discover their identities.

Romantic relationships collapse and reform.

Villains become heroes, heroes become suspects, and ordinary conversations can suddenly transform into life-changing revelations.

For a comedian accustomed to examining absurd situations, the genre offers almost unlimited possibilities.

But Oliver does not appear interested in mocking soap operas from the outside.

Instead, he seems genuinely excited to participate in them.

That distinction gives his appearances an unexpectedly affectionate quality.

He wants the dramatic hair.

Now it must deal with John Oliver inspecting its water supply.

For viewers familiar only with his work on Last Week Tonight, the appearance offers an opportunity to see the comedian completely commit to an entirely different television universe.

And with three episodes rather than a single brief cameo, Devlin St. John has enough time to make an impression.

Whether his investigation changes Salem forever remains to be seen.

His wig, however, has already accomplished something impressive.

Before the character has even fully arrived, John Oliver’s homemade contribution to daytime television has become one of the most memorable parts of his soap opera debut.
