Kaia Gerber’s Secret Writing Habit Revealed: She Writes Fan Fiction About Something That Is ‘Not a Human’

Kaia Gerber has spent years building a career in fashion, acting and literature, but one of her most unusual creative habits had remained largely hidden from the public.

Until now.

During an appearance on Jake Shane’s Therapuss podcast on Thursday, August 6, the 24-year-old model and actress unexpectedly revealed that she writes fan fiction in her spare time.

There was only one problem.

She refused to say exactly what—or who—she writes about.

“I write fan fiction,” Gerber admitted during the conversation.

For someone already known for her love of books, the confession might not have seemed completely surprising. But what followed quickly turned the casual revelation into something far more mysterious.

Gerber explained that she does not write fan fiction for attention, publication or online recognition.

In fact, she often does not share it anywhere at all.

“It’s so fun to write something even if you don’t put it — like, I write fan fiction and I don’t put it anywhere, I just like it,” she said.

Set in Los Angeles in 1981, the story follows a group of high school seniors attending an elite prep school while a serial killer begins threatening the world around them.

The combination of youth, privilege, paranoia and violence fits naturally within Ellis’ body of work.

The author is also known for novels including Less Than Zero and American Psycho, works that helped establish his reputation as one of the most provocative voices in modern American literature.

Gerber’s involvement in The Shards therefore connects two important parts of her public identity.

There is Kaia Gerber the actress.

And then there is Kaia Gerber the serious reader.

But apparently, there is also a third version:

Kaia Gerber the anonymous fan-fiction writer.

The Therapuss conversation was not actually the first time she had hinted at the secret hobby.

Just two days earlier, Gerber appeared alongside her The Shards costar Graham Campbell in a video shared by British media company VT.

The two actors were playing a game in which they were asked whether certain behaviors were acceptable or worthy of judgment.

Then came a question about fan fiction.

“Adults who write erotic fan fiction, is it fine or do we judge?” the interviewer asked.

Campbell responded that it was “better than kids” writing erotic stories.

Gerber immediately laughed at his answer.

“That literally wasn’t the question,” she told him.

Then, seemingly without much hesitation, she dropped another revelation.

“You know I write fan fiction?”

Campbell appeared surprised.

“What kind of fan fiction?” he asked.

Once again, Gerber refused to answer.

Instead, she clarified only what it was not.

“It’s not Shards fan fiction, but I, honestly, should start writing Shards fanfic,” she said.

Then she acknowledged something even more intriguing.

“I don’t know if I’ve ever spoken about it publicly, but I do write it,” Gerber continued. “It’s not under my name but I do write fan fiction.”

That detail raised another fascinating possibility.

Somewhere online, there may already be fan fiction written by Kaia Gerber without readers having any idea who is actually behind it.

Gerber did not reveal the username she might use.

She did not identify a website.

She did not say whether the stories were public or private.

And she certainly did not reveal the mysterious non-human subject at the center of her writing.

When Campbell tried to learn more, Gerber shut the conversation down with humor.

“It’s not important,” she insisted.

Then, when the questioning continued, she jokingly ended the interrogation.

“Don’t worry about it. Let’s move on.”

The secrecy has only made the revelation more entertaining.

But Gerber’s interest in writing and storytelling is not entirely unexpected.

Books have played a major role in her life for years.

In 2020, she started what would eventually become her book club, Library Science.

The project officially launched in 2024 alongside Alyssa Reeder and has continued to highlight literary works that Gerber believes deserve attention.

The book club has become more than a celebrity side project.

It has allowed Gerber to publicly discuss authors, fiction and ideas while introducing readers to both contemporary and established literature.

Among Library Science’s 2026 selections have been Maggie O’Farrell’s Hamnet and Jamie Quatro’s I Want To Show You More.

That literary background has also been noticed by the people working alongside her.

Graham Campbell recently praised Gerber during an interview with PEOPLE, describing her intelligence as one of the qualities that immediately stood out to him.

“Kaia has a wild intelligence that I think the world knows quite a bit about, especially through her work with her company Library Science,” Campbell said.

He also described her as “incredibly intelligent” and “incredibly empathetic.”

Those qualities may help explain why Gerber appears so interested not only in performing stories but also in creating them herself.

Fan fiction is often dismissed as a casual or niche corner of writing culture.

But for many writers, it provides a space to experiment without the pressures attached to traditional publishing.

Characters and fictional worlds already exist.

The writer is free to explore alternative relationships, new situations and imaginative possibilities.

For Gerber, that freedom appears to be exactly the point.

She can write without attaching her famous name to the work.

She can create without worrying about reviews.

And perhaps most importantly, she can simply enjoy storytelling for its own sake.

That may be why she appears so determined to protect the identity of her mysterious subject.

At a time when almost every detail of celebrity life can become public within minutes, Gerber has managed to keep at least one creative world largely to herself.

She has revealed that the stories exist.

She has admitted she sometimes writes anonymously.

And she has given fans exactly one tantalizing clue.

The subject is “not a human.”

For now, that is all she is willing to say.

And judging by how quickly she shut down every attempt to investigate further, Kaia Gerber seems perfectly happy to leave everyone guessing.
