Demi Lovato Makes Surprise Return as Mitchie Torres in ‘Camp Rock 3’ as Jonas Brothers Reunite for Disney Sequel

Demi Lovato is officially back at Camp Rock.

The singer and actress makes a surprise return in “Camp Rock 3,” reprising her role as Mitchie Torres, the character that helped turn her into a major Disney star nearly two decades ago.

Lovato’s involvement goes beyond appearing on screen. She also serves as an executive producer on the new film, which continues one of Disney Channel’s most recognizable musical franchises.

“Camp Rock 3” premieres Thursday at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Disney Channel and will become available to stream the following day on Disney+.

The sequel also reunites Lovato with Joe Jonas, Kevin Jonas and Nick Jonas, who return as the fictional band Connect 3.

This time, however, the story is designed to connect the original generation of “Camp Rock” stars with an entirely new group of young performers.

Connect 3 Returns to Camp Rock

In the new movie, Connect 3 is searching for a new opening act.

Their search brings them back to Camp Rock, the musical summer camp at the center of the franchise, where they hope to discover the next major young talent.

The setup allows the Jonas Brothers to return to the characters that helped strengthen their Disney-era popularity while introducing a new cast intended to carry the franchise forward.

Among the newcomers are Liamani Segura, known for “Descendants: Wicked Wonderland,” and Malachi Barton, who appeared in “Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires.”

The new cast also includes Lumi Pollack, Sherry Cola, Hudson Stone, Casey Trotter, Brooklynn Pitts and Ava Jean.

Another familiar face will also return.

Maria Canals-Barrera reprises her role as Connie Torres, Mitchie’s mother, adding another direct connection to the original films.

But the biggest surprise is Lovato herself.

Disney had kept the extent of Mitchie’s involvement relatively quiet, making her appearance a major nostalgic moment for viewers who grew up with the first two movies.

Finding the Right Role for Mitchie

Director Veronica Rodriguez said the filmmakers were careful about how they brought Mitchie back.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Rodriguez explained that there were detailed conversations with Lovato about how much of the story should involve her character.

The challenge was clear.

Mitchie and Connect 3 remain essential to the identity of “Camp Rock,” but the new film also needs to give its younger cast enough space to establish their own characters.

“We wanted to find the right balance of how much she should be in the film and what Mitchie’s involvement looked like,” Rodriguez said.

That philosophy is expressed directly by Mitchie in the movie.

At one point, she tells her mother that the story is not supposed to center on her anymore.

“This isn’t about me, it’s about them,” Mitchie says. “It’s their time to shine. This is the new generation of campers.”

Rodriguez said that idea became central to how the filmmakers approached both Mitchie and Connect 3.

The returning characters needed to be important enough to justify their presence, but not so dominant that audiences could not form an emotional connection with the new campers.

“With Mitchie and Connect 3, we wanted them to be ingrained and necessary for the story but also leave enough room and space for the world to fall in love with the new generation of campers,” Rodriguez explained.

The Franchise That Helped Launch Lovato

Lovato first played Mitchie Torres in the original “Camp Rock,” released in 2008.

The movie starred her alongside Joe, Kevin and Nick Jonas and followed Mitchie as she attended a prestigious summer music camp while trying to find confidence in herself and her talent.

The role became one of the defining performances of Lovato’s early career.

Along with her music and Disney television work, “Camp Rock” helped establish her as one of the network’s biggest young stars.

The movie also became a major success for Disney Channel.

Two years later, Lovato and the Jonas Brothers reunited for “Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam,” released in 2010.

The sequel expanded the rivalry and musical competition at the center of the franchise while continuing the relationships established in the first movie.

Both films became major ratings events.

According to the information released with the new sequel, “Camp Rock” and “Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam” were the No. 1 cable movie premieres in their respective years of release.

They also remain among the Top 10 Disney Channel Original Movies of all time.

That lasting popularity helps explain why Disney is returning to the franchise so many years later.

A New Generation With Familiar Faces

“Camp Rock 3” is clearly built around nostalgia, but the filmmakers are also positioning the movie as a continuation rather than simply a reunion.

Mitchie and Connect 3 provide a bridge to the past.

The younger campers, however, represent the future of the story.

The premise of Connect 3 searching for a new opening act gives the sequel a natural way to introduce new singers and performers while keeping the original characters actively involved.

For longtime fans, seeing Lovato once again play Mitchie creates an emotional link to the era when Disney Channel Original Movies were central to youth pop culture.

For younger viewers, the new cast offers an entry point that does not require deep familiarity with the movies released in 2008 and 2010.

That balance appears to have been intentional from the beginning.

Rodriguez’s comments suggest that the creative team understood the risk of allowing nostalgia to overwhelm the new story.

Rodriguez directed “Camp Rock 3” from a screenplay written by Eydie Faye.

The movie is produced by Disney Kids & Family, with choreography by Jamal Sims.

The executive producing team includes several familiar names connected to the franchise.

Tim Federle serves as an executive producer alongside Joe Jonas, Kevin Jonas, Nick Jonas and Demi Lovato.

Also executive producing are Betsy Sullenger, Spencer Berman and Gary Marsh.

The film additionally gives a “special thanks” to Alan Sacks for his contribution to the “Camp Rock” franchise.

Lovato’s executive producer credit makes her return particularly notable.
