Days before the album’s release on August 14, a review from The Guardian teased lyrics from her track, The Governor’s Waltz, that presumably referenced Gracie, 26.

On the track, Phoebe, 31, sings, “She can pretend to be me // Since she took my place in my bed, on that stage.”

It’s suspected that the line is a subtle jab at Gracie, who is currently dating Phoebe’s ex-boyfriend, actor Paul, 30.

Much of the album is about the death of Phoebe’s father, with whom she had a strained relationship, and the end of her high-profile relationship with Paul, according to the outlet.

The review also pointed out that the title track seemed to confirm rumors that Phoebe and Paul were engaged before their split, as she sings, “I’m supposed to be married but I called it off.”

Phoebe and Paul dated for about two years before their break-up in 2022, amid rumors that Phoebe cheated with comedian and musician Bo Burnham.

Gracie, who has been vocal about being a fan of Phoebe, began her relationship with Paul in 2024.

Paul has since publicly shown his support for Gracie, and they were even seen packing on the PDA at the Mad Cool Festival in Spain, where Gracie performed last summer.

Fans speculated that Phoebe appearing to call out Gracie in her song was in response to Gracie making a similar move toward the indie folk singer in her 2024 album, The Secret of Us.

Gracie is said to have revealed details of Paul’s past relationship with Phoebe in multiple tracks, though she didn’t reference either by name.

One example is in her track Normal Thing, in which Gracie sings, “When did you slip through my fingers, did I ever have you? / Was I just a placeholder to fill the hole inside you? / … Nothing left to say ’cause you’re not over her, now, are you?”

She also appeared to reference their romance in her song Risk, singing, “Know you had a girl, but it didn’t work out / Know you bought a house, but you had to move out…”

The songwriters’ friendship changed drastically after Gracie opened for Phoebe during select dates of her Reunion Tour in October 2021.

They were also the co-opening acts on Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in May 2023.

However, things shifted as fans repeatedly compared the two artists for their similar styles and visual aesthetics.

The tension escalated when Gracie used stage props and bedroom sets in a performance dramatically similar to Phoebe’s signature look.

Phoebe first broke into mainstream fame in 2020 with the debut of her second album, Punisher, followed by several Grammy nominations and a viral Saturday Night Live performance.

Gracie reached superstardom shortly after, building a cult following with her indie pop sound and expanding her audience while opening for Phoebe and Taylor at their massive arena shows.
