Yellowstone Dutton Family Tree, Explained! l 2026 UPDATE

With each Yellowstone spin-off, especially the prequels, we put the pieces together to figure out the Dutton family tree. Right now things are a bit complicated. With the Madison airing this year as a Yellowstone spin-off, people are wondering why it’s promoted as a Yellowstone spin-off. Because on the surface, it doesn’t look like a part of this franchise.

 That aside, there’s confusion with the fourth generation. Spencer and Alex’s son, John the second,  is the third generation and is known as John the third’s father. But we also know Kevin Costner’s John is the fifth generation. So what happened to the fourth generation? Something doesn’t add up, but let’s see from the beginning.

Let’s begin with the first generation. Yellowstone prequels 1883 and 1923 introduce six members from the first generation, including Margaret, James,  Cara, Jacob, and last but not least, Claire. Margaret and James  Dutton. As we all know this couple is introduced in 1883 as the parents of Elsa, John,  and Spencer.

 James wants a new life out west with his family, and that’s how they end up on what is now called the Dutton land. After they let Elsa choose the land they’ll settle in, the couple loses Elsa. After  that, we learn that James also dies during a hunt, and Margaret writes a letter to James’s older brother, Jacob Dutton, to ask for help.

 But well, tragedy strikes, and Margaret ends up dying from hypothermia before Jacob arrives in Montana. Cara and Jacob Dutton. Even though they don’t have their own children, they sort of become John and Spencer’s parents since the boys were little when they lost their parents. >>  >> We see how hard working they are in the Yellowstone prequel 1923.

 They do anything and everything to keep their land and family intact. They’re in their 70s in 1923, so sadly, we probably won’t be seeing them in future prequels. Claire Dutton. Even though we don’t get to see Claire much, she is part of the family and her story is so sad. She’s James and Jacob’s sister and we see her traveling with James’s family in 1883.

What we know about her is limited, but we know that she’s a widow and after her own daughter is killed, she decides to take her own life. By the way, did you know that Dawn Olivieri, who played Claire, also appears in Yellowstone as Sarah Atwood, who orchestrated the plan to kill John Dutton? Now that the first generation is done, let’s take a look at the second generation starting with our one and only Elsa Dutton.

 I don’t know about you guys, but she’s my favorite character and her death  wrecked me. She’s so important to the story since she picked the spot where her family will live for years and even rest in peace after they’re gone.  During that dangerous journey in 1883, Elsa gets shot by an arrow and slowly dies. Emma and John Dutton.

 Elsa’s little brother John is the first John we  know. We see him as a kid in 1883 and in 1923, he’s an adult. But sadly, he gets killed in an ambush and Emma unalives herself since she can’t stand living in a world where her husband doesn’t Alex and Spencer Dutton. Yellowstone is full of tragic stories,  but this one hit differently and I think you’re on my side on this.

Spencer is the youngest child of Margaret and James, but he’s raised by Cara and Jacob. In 1923, Spencer decides to return to Montana since his family needs him and on  the way, he and Alex are forced to separate. Alex does anything she can to get there >>  >> and her journey is excruciating to say the least.

 After they manage to reunite, Alex gives birth to their son and dies. They named their son John and yes, this is our second John. Now, it’s time to talk about the third generation, and be warned, things will get a bit complicated from now on. Elizabeth and Jack Dutton. Jack is John and Emma’s son. In the prequel 1923, he gets married to Elizabeth.

 While they had their ups and downs, I like the chaotic energy between the two. At some point, Elizabeth gets pregnant, but Jack gets killed before he can see his own baby. After his death, Elizabeth leaves Montana and returns to Boston to live with her mother. We don’t know if she gave birth to the baby or not, but the actor confirmed that Elizabeth was still pregnant while leaving Montana.

 So, there’s that. John the second and unknown. As I’ve mentioned earlier, Spencer and Alex had a son and named him John. After Alex dies, Spencer never remarrys, but he has a son with a widow. We don’t know his name yet, but I’m guessing we’ll get to see him in the upcoming prequel 1944. Now, here’s the thing.

 Many people believe that Spencer’s son is John the third’s father, but here’s what I don’t understand. Kevin Costner’s John is known as the fifth generation, while John the second belongs to the third generation. >>  >> So, what does that even mean? Did Sheridan skip a beat here, or does he have other plans? What happened to the fourth generation? Spencer’s grandchildren.

 They belong to the fourth generation. >>  >> That is, only if his children survive long enough to build a family. Alex gave birth to a premature baby, >>  >> and it’s 1923 we’re talking about. I’m sorry, but that baby may not survive,  even though Cara would do anything to keep him alive. But if he doesn’t, then Spencer has another son.

And who knows, maybe the story will focus on his lineage as a Dutton. Elizabeth and Jack’s child. We all know Elizabeth was pregnant, but we never get to learn the baby’s fate. So, get this. If Spencer and Alex’s son dies, Elizabeth might want to name her son John in his memory. I mean, their child belongs to the fourth generation, and if he’s named John, everything adds up.

But, what do you think? Another theory of mine is that the characters in The Madison might be related to Elizabeth. They’re all pretty and blonde, just like her. So, if my first theory is wrong, then I’m counting on this one. >>  >> Do you think it’s possible that Stacy is Elizabeth’s granddaughter? Let’s discuss in the comments below while I move on to the fifth generation, Evelyn and John the third.

 Now, I have a lot to say about them, but let’s keep it short because we have many other characters, and I want to focus on the family tree. Evelyn dies in a tragic accident, and John Dutton is murdered in the second half of season 5, which leads to the fall of the Dutton Ranch. Peter Dutton. Here’s another tragic story.

 Peter is John’s  brother, who only lived about 18 hours. Well, that was all. Now, let’s move on to the sixth generation, meaning John’s children. Beth Dutton. As John’s only daughter, Beth is  definitely something. In season 5, she kills her own brother Jamie and proves to us how far she can go. In May, we’ll have a present-day spin-off called Dutton Ranch.

 The show will focus on Beth and Rip, whose adventures get really dark and dangerous. Monica and Kayce Dutton. As the youngest child in the family, Kayce is as broken as Beth. After the events in Yellowstone, he loses his wife Monica to cancer, becomes a marshal, and he too has his own spin-off.

He’s the oldest Dutton sibling, and we don’t get to hear much about him because he gets killed in the first season of Yellowstone. Jamie Dutton. I’m genuinely scared of the backlash I might get because of mentioning Jamie in such a list, but even though he’s adopted, we can’t deny that he’s a Dutton after all.

Okay, it’s finally time to talk about the seventh generation. And if you made it this far, congrats on your attention span. Jamie Dutton Jr. Even though many people don’t consider Jamie as a Dutton, I wonder if this baby can count as a Dutton. >>  >> To me he does, so there’s that. Beth earlier threatened Jamie about taking his baby away from him,  and I wonder if that will ever happen in the upcoming spin-off. Tate Dutton.

If you leave Carter and Jamie Jr. out of the picture, Tate is the only grandson John the third has.  He’s been feeling anxious thinking that the land will be his, and he didn’t want such responsibility. But I guess those days are over, and now I wonder what will happen to him. All right. Here’s the Dutton family tree.
