What Became of Solid Rock Church After Mica Miller’s Death? Inside the Controversy That Changed the Congregation

More than two years after the death of Mica Miller drew national attention to her troubled marriage to pastor John-Paul “JP” Miller, the church that once stood at the center of their lives has undergone a dramatic transformation.

Solid Rock Church in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, was founded and led by John-Paul, with Mica becoming deeply involved in its ministry. But following Mica’s death by suicide in April 2024, allegations surrounding their marriage, protests outside the church and mounting legal controversies dramatically changed the congregation’s future.

Solid Rock eventually closed, and the property was sold for more than $2 million. Yet John-Paul has continued preaching elsewhere in Myrtle Beach.

The story of the church is closely connected to the complicated history between Mica and John-Paul.

Mica and her family moved from Wichita, Kansas, to Myrtle Beach when she was a teenager. Faith and music were important parts of her upbringing, and her brother Nate later recalled in the Netflix docuseries Death of the Pastor’s Wife that Mica had an especially strong singing voice.

She eventually became heavily involved with Solid Rock, serving as worship leader and overseeing the church choir. She also worked as John-Paul’s assistant and nanny.

John-Paul came from a religious family himself. His father, Reginald Wayne Miller, was also a pastor and founded Cathedral Bible College.

John-Paul established Solid Rock Church and began pastoring there in 2016. The Myrtle Beach Christian congregation operated under the motto “Love God and Love People.”

John-Paul described the church as being built around four central principles: “We serve,” “We forgive,” “We respect” and “We give.”

His sermons covered subjects ranging from money to relationships and marriage.

But behind the public ministry, Mica and John-Paul’s personal relationship was becoming increasingly complicated.

According to Death of the Pastor’s Wife, Mica and John-Paul began an affair in 2015, when she was 20 and he was 35.

Both were married to other people at the time.

Mica had married her first husband, Jeremy, when she was 18, while John-Paul was married to Alison Williams, with whom he had five children.

They eventually divorced their respective spouses and married each other in November 2017.

Years later, friends and relatives of Mica would characterize the marriage very differently from the image presented publicly.

In the Netflix docuseries, people close to Mica alleged that John-Paul was emotionally manipulative and extremely controlling.

Mica’s friend Bruna Pabon claimed that he would “mentally torture her” until he received what he wanted.

Friends also alleged that John-Paul restricted Mica’s time with other people and would prevent her from sleeping until they had sex.

The marriage was additionally affected by allegations of infidelity. Friends and relatives accused John-Paul of having multiple affairs, including an alleged relationship with Suzie Skinner, who later became his wife.

Mica separated from John-Paul in January 2023 and later filed for divorce.

According to prosecutors, however, the separation did not end their conflict.

Authorities have alleged that John-Paul cyberstalked Mica and contacted her more than 50 times in a single day.

Prosecutors also alleged that he tracked her vehicle with a GPS device, took some of her belongings and posted a nude photograph of her online without her consent.

Authorities further alleged that John-Paul had Mica involuntarily hospitalized.

Mica initially dismissed her divorce case in February 2024. Two months later, she filed again.

Just two days after that second filing, events took a devastating turn.

On April 27, 2024, Mica called 911 from Lumber River State Park in North Carolina and indicated that she intended to die by suicide.

Police subsequently found her dead at the park.

She was 30 years old.

Her death was officially ruled a suicide.

John-Paul has denied having any involvement in Mica’s death. He and Suzie also declined to comment to the producers of Death of the Pastor’s Wife.

But the controversy surrounding Mica’s relationship with John-Paul did not disappear after her death.

Instead, attention increasingly shifted toward Solid Rock Church itself.

A group of protesters known as “Justice for Mica” began gathering outside the church during Sunday services.

According to one protester, the demonstrations were intended to raise awareness about domestic violence and keep public attention focused on Mica’s story.

Protesters frequently carried signs, recorded people entering the church and shouted slogans including “Justice for Mica” and “You can’t hide from the FBI.”

The demonstrations became a regular presence around Solid Rock.

In November 2024, John-Paul was arrested following accusations that he assaulted a protester, according to Myrtle Beach Police Department records.

Solid Rock Church closed later that month.

John-Paul’s attorney, Russell B. Long, blamed the demonstrations for the congregation’s collapse, arguing that protesters had continually disrupted the church until it could no longer operate.

“The church has died. The church has closed down,” Long said at the time.

The closure also disrupted plans for Solid Rock’s future expansion.

Before Mica’s death, the church had purchased two plots of land from Salem Woods Holding LLC in August 2023.

But declining attendance following the controversy meant that a proposed new church was never constructed.

Then came another decisive development.

In February 2025, the Solid Rock Church property was sold for more than $2 million.

According to reporting cited in the source material, the company that purchased the site planned to demolish the church and construct condominiums on the property.

John-Paul blamed Myrtle Beach officials for failing to protect the congregation from what he characterized as harassment by protesters.

He lamented that the chapel, which had survived hurricanes, wars and decades of redevelopment, would ultimately disappear and be replaced by condos.

Yet losing the physical church did not end John-Paul’s ministry.

According to the Netflix docuseries, he has continued preaching at various locations around Myrtle Beach, while Suzie leads worship for the congregation members who remain.

At the same time, John-Paul’s legal problems have continued.

In 2025, federal prosecutors indicted him on allegations of cyberstalking Mica before her death and making false statements to investigators.

Separate allegations have also emerged involving John-Paul and his father.

A February 2025 civil complaint filed in Horry County accused both men of sexual abuse and predatory behavior, including allegations involving minors.

Both John-Paul and Reginald have denied those accusations. John-Paul later countersued the woman who brought the allegations.

The claims remain allegations and should not be treated as established findings of guilt.

For Solid Rock Church, however, the consequences of everything that followed Mica’s death are already unmistakable.

The congregation that John-Paul founded, where Mica once sang and led worship, no longer occupies its longtime building.

Its property has been sold, plans for expansion were abandoned, and the controversy surrounding Mica’s death fundamentally altered the church’s public identity.

What remains is a smaller group of followers and a pastor continuing to preach without the institution that once served as the physical center of his ministry.

Solid Rock Church may have closed its doors, but the legal cases and unanswered questions surrounding Mica and John-Paul Miller continue to keep their story in the public eye.
