Travis Barker Reveals Why He and Kourtney Kardashian Chose to Open Up About Their Miscarriage in New Documentary
For Travis Barker and Kourtney Kardashian Barker, some parts of their relationship have always belonged only to them.
Their marriage, their blended family and their long journey toward having a child together have all played out partly in public, but not every painful chapter was immediately shared.
One of the most difficult was their experience with miscarriage.
Now, Travis Barker is explaining why he and his wife finally decided to speak about that loss on camera.
The Blink-182 drummer, 50, discussed the decision while promoting his new Hulu documentary, Travis Barker: Louder Than Fear, during a recent appearance on The New York Times’ Popcast.
According to Barker, the couple did not open up simply because the documentary required them to reveal private information.
They did it because they believed their story might help other people who had lived through something similar.
“When there’s things that can benefit people or help people relate to something, I think that’s always like a green light,” Barker explained.
He added that Kardashian Barker, 47, has often been willing to speak publicly when she feels that sharing something personal could make other people feel less alone.
For Barker, their fertility journey was one of those stories.
It had included miscarriage.
It had included IVF.
It had included disappointment when fertility treatment did not work as they had hoped.
And eventually, after that difficult process, Kardashian Barker became pregnant naturally.
“Our journey of miscarriages and then IVF and it’s failed, resulting in us having a baby naturally — like I feel like that’s a story that so many people can relate [to],” Barker said.
The couple ultimately welcomed their son, Rocky Thirteen Barker, in November 2023.
He is now 2½ years old.
But the road to his birth was far from simple.
For years, Kardashian Barker had been open about undergoing fertility treatment and about the physical and emotional toll the process could take.
She and Barker had wanted to have a child together after marrying and joining their already large families.
Their eventual pregnancy was therefore deeply meaningful.
But Barker’s new comments reveal more clearly that before Rocky arrived, the couple also endured a miscarriage — a painful experience they had not discussed in detail on The Kardashians.
That raised an obvious question.
Why reveal it in Barker’s documentary instead?
Barker said the format itself made the conversation happen naturally.
Unlike a reality series built around ongoing family life, Louder Than Fear unfolds largely through interviews.
Barker explained that the filmmakers would ask him questions, listen to his responses and then encourage him to go deeper.
“I’ll say something, and then they’re like, ‘Oh, well tell me more about that,’ ” he said.
“And that’s how that came up.”
In other words, the disclosure was not necessarily planned as a major announcement.
It emerged during a conversation.
That distinction appears important.
For Barker and Kardashian Barker, speaking about the miscarriage was not about turning a private loss into entertainment.
It was about acknowledging a part of their journey that might resonate with other couples who have experienced infertility, failed IVF treatments or pregnancy loss.
Their story also sits inside a much larger family structure.
Together, Barker and Kardashian Barker are part of a blended family of nine.
Kardashian Barker shares three children with her former partner Scott Disick: sons Mason, 16, and Reign, 11, and daughter Penelope, 14.
Barker shares son Landon, 22, and daughter Alabama, 20, with ex-wife Shanna Moakler.
He also maintains a close relationship with Atiana De La Hoya, Moakler’s daughter with former boxing champion Oscar De La Hoya.
Then came Rocky.
His arrival gave Barker and Kardashian Barker their first biological child together, but it also added another layer to a family that was already learning how to live, travel and grow together.
Kardashian Barker has previously acknowledged that blending two established families did not happen instantly.
During a February 2025 episode of The Kardashians, she spoke candidly about the adjustment.
“I feel like blending, in the beginning, is a lot of adjusting for each person,” she said.
Part of the challenge involved moving between different homes and routines.
“Us in their space and then us being out of our space and into a new space,” she explained.
For children who had spent much of their lives in familiar homes, suddenly sharing a new household required adaptation.
“My stepkids have lived in their home for their whole lives,” Kardashian Barker said.
“It’s new, all living together in one house, which is nice.”
Despite the transition, she said the family had reached a much more comfortable place.
“It is change, but I think we’re at a really amazing place with it.”
That sense of family unity has also appeared in the moments Kardashian Barker chooses to share online.
In June, she posted a collection of black-and-white images showing everyday family life.
One photo featured Penelope lying on the floor using a tablet while Reign rested on top of her and Rocky sat on top of him.
The image was casual, chaotic and affectionate — the kind of moment that suggested the children had found a natural rhythm together.
Kardashian Barker captioned the carousel simply, “June gloom.”
Other images showed quieter moments between mother and son.
She shared a beach walk with Rocky and another photo from a diner, where she held him on her lap while taking a mirror selfie.
Rocky wore a gray camouflage-style T-shirt, while Kardashian Barker wore black with her hair styled in bangs.
As she often does, she covered her youngest child’s face with a heart emoji, maintaining a degree of privacy even while sharing glimpses of family life.
That balance between openness and boundaries appears to define much of the couple’s approach.
They have shared their fertility struggles.
They have spoken about blending families.
They have shown small moments involving Rocky.
But they have not made every painful detail public immediately.
The miscarriage was one of those details.
Now, Barker says the reason for finally discussing it is simple.
If telling the story can help someone else recognize their own experience, then it is worth telling.
For couples dealing with infertility or pregnancy loss, those experiences can often feel isolating.
They may involve months or years of medical appointments, uncertainty, disappointment and private grief.
Even people surrounded by family can struggle to find others who understand exactly what they are going through.
Barker appears to believe that public figures can sometimes reduce that isolation by speaking openly.
That does not mean every detail needs to be shared.
But when a personal story has the potential to create recognition or comfort, he sees value in allowing it into the public conversation.
His documentary gave him that opportunity.
And the story now has an ending very different from some of its darkest moments.
After miscarriage and unsuccessful IVF attempts, Barker and Kardashian Barker eventually welcomed Rocky naturally.
Today, their family includes older children, stepchildren and the toddler they spent years hoping to have together.
The journey was complicated.
It was painful.
And according to Barker, that is precisely why they decided not to pretend it had been easy.
For Travis Barker and Kourtney Kardashian Barker, sharing the miscarriage was not about reopening an old wound for attention.
It was about acknowledging the reality behind the happy ending.
And if another couple hears their story and feels even slightly less alone, Barker believes that honesty may have been worth it.
