Jim Carrey Is Heading to the Future: Hollywood Icon Confirmed to Star in Live-Action ‘The Jetsons’ Movie

After decades of playing some of cinema’s most unforgettable characters, Jim Carrey is preparing to enter an entirely different world — one filled with flying cars, robot maids and cities floating high above the ground.

The 64-year-old actor has officially been confirmed to star in an upcoming live-action adaptation of The Jetsons, the beloved Hanna-Barbera animated series that imagined what family life might look like in a futuristic Space Age.

Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed Carrey’s involvement on Thursday, August 6, in its second-quarter shareholder letter, ending months of speculation about whether the comedy legend would actually join the project.

The movie is expected to arrive sometime after 2027.

For fans who grew up watching George Jetson race through the skies in his futuristic car or hearing the unmistakable sound of Rosie the Robot moving through the family’s high-tech home, the announcement represents something Hollywood has discussed for years but never fully brought to life.

Now, with Carrey attached, the Jetson family may finally be making the leap from animation into live action.

Rumors about Carrey’s involvement first began circulating in October 2025.

At the time, Variety reported that the actor was in negotiations to lead the film.

Colin Trevorrow, best known for directing Jurassic World, was also said to be involved, alongside writer Joe Epstein.

For months, however, nothing was officially confirmed.

That changed with Warner Bros. Discovery’s announcement.

Although the studio has not yet revealed Carrey’s specific role, his presence immediately gives the project a level of star power few modern adaptations can match.

The original animated series debuted in 1962.

Created by Hanna-Barbera Productions and broadcast on ABC, The Jetsons was conceived as a futuristic counterpart to another enormously popular animated family: The Flintstones.

While Fred Flintstone and his family lived in a humorous prehistoric world, George Jetson and his relatives represented the opposite extreme.

They lived in a vision of the future.

George was the working father.

Jane was his wife.

Their children were teenage daughter Judy and young son Elroy.

Their household also included Rosie, a robotic maid who became one of the show’s most recognizable characters, and Astro, the family’s enormous and lovable Great Dane.

In the Jetsons’ world, technology had transformed almost every aspect of daily life.

Cars flew through the air.

Homes floated high above the ground.

Machines handled chores.

Video calls were ordinary.

Buttons replaced physical labor.

Even walking sometimes seemed unnecessary thanks to automated sidewalks and conveyor belts.

When the series first aired more than six decades ago, much of that technology appeared almost absurdly futuristic.

Some of it now looks surprisingly familiar.

Video conferencing, robotic household devices, smart homes and increasingly autonomous machines have all become part of modern life.

That strange overlap between 1960s fantasy and contemporary reality could give the upcoming film an opportunity to reinvent The Jetsons for a new generation.

The franchise has never completely disappeared.

Although the original television series began in 1962, it later returned through revivals that continued into the 1980s.

The characters subsequently appeared in television movies, comic books, video games and other projects.

Then, in 1990, the family reached movie theaters with Jetsons: The Movie.

That animated film featured the voices of George O’Hanlon and legendary voice actor Mel Blanc and represented one of the franchise’s most ambitious projects at the time.

But a major live-action theatrical adaptation has remained elusive.

That could now change.

And Jim Carrey’s involvement arrives during what appears to be a renewed period of activity for the actor.

In recent years, he has found enormous success with another family-friendly franchise.

From 2020 through 2024, Carrey portrayed the eccentric villain Dr. Robotnik in three Sonic the Hedgehog movies.

The character allowed him to return to the wildly expressive style of comedy associated with some of his most famous early performances.

With his enormous mustache, elaborate machines, outrageous speeches and increasingly exaggerated appearance, Robotnik often felt like a live-action cartoon character.

That may make Carrey particularly well suited to The Jetsons.

But the futuristic project is not the only nostalgic franchise potentially bringing him back to the screen.

Earlier in the summer of 2026, reports emerged that Carrey was also in talks to reprise one of his most recognizable roles: the Grinch.

Carrey famously played the green Christmas-hating character in Ron Howard’s 2000 adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

The performance remains one of the defining roles of his career.

More than 25 years later, a sequel is now in development.

Ron Howard is expected to return as director, while also producing the project alongside his longtime Imagine Entertainment partner Brian Grazer.

Howard and Imagine Entertainment publicly confirmed the sequel’s development on June 18.

They shared an image of Carrey dressed as the Grinch from the original production and teased the character’s possible return.

“He’s a mean one…” the post began before announcing that another How the Grinch Stole Christmas movie was being developed.

Carrey’s potential return as the Grinch, combined with his confirmed role in The Jetsons, suggests that the actor is embracing a new chapter built partly around family entertainment and iconic characters.

It is particularly notable considering that Carrey has periodically suggested over the years that he might reduce his acting workload.

Rather than disappearing completely, however, he has continued to return when the right projects have attracted him.

Dr. Robotnik brought him back repeatedly.

The Grinch may do the same.

And now The Jetsons is offering him an entirely new universe.

Many questions remain unanswered.

Warner Bros. Discovery has not revealed exactly whom Carrey will play.

No complete cast has been announced.

Plot details remain under wraps.

And because the movie is not expected until sometime after 2027, audiences may have a significant wait before they see the finished result.

But the confirmation alone is enough to transform a long-rumored project into something much more concrete.

For generations of viewers, The Jetsons represented an optimistic and often absurd vision of tomorrow.

More than 60 years after George, Jane, Judy and Elroy first appeared on television, Hollywood is preparing to imagine that future again.

This time, however, it will not exist only in animation.

And somewhere inside that world of flying cars, robotic helpers and impossible technology will be one of the most naturally animated performers Hollywood has ever produced.
