Taylor Swift Honors Dolly Parton in Emotional Tribute: ‘She Was True Grace and True Grit’

Taylor Swift is remembering Dolly Parton with an emotional tribute following the death of the country music legend at the age of 80, reflecting not only on Parton’s extraordinary musical career but also on the generosity, courage and individuality that made her an inspiration to generations of artists.

“A world without Dolly doesn’t feel possible, real, or right,” Swift, 36, said in a statement shared with PEOPLE on Tuesday, Aug. 25.

Swift said that although Parton’s absence would be deeply felt, the enormous impact she made throughout her life ensured that her influence would continue for generations.

“But because of the eternally generous way she spent her time on this earth and the countless lives she changed for the better, her legacy will be an everlasting one,” Swift continued.

The pop superstar also highlighted Parton’s compassion toward people facing hardship and her determination when protecting her own artistic identity and self-respect.

“She possessed the softest heart when it came to the struggles of others, and a backbone of steel to defend her own self worth as an artist,” Swift continued.

Parton’s influence extended far beyond the recording studio. Swift specifically acknowledged both her music and her extensive philanthropic efforts, including the millions of books distributed to children through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

“Along with her other fans, I am so grateful for all of it,” Swift said.

She expressed gratitude for the songs Parton wrote throughout her decades-long career, describing melodies and lyrics powerful enough to “thaw even the coldest hearts.”

Swift also recognized Parton’s commitment to childhood literacy.

“For the millions of books she provided children all over the world so that they might fall in love with stories the way she did,” Swift said.

Parton founded the Imagination Library with the goal of encouraging children to develop a love of reading from an early age. Over the years, the program grew into one of the most recognizable parts of her charitable legacy.

Swift additionally credited Parton with helping create opportunities for younger generations of women in entertainment.

“For the tightropes she walked so that young girls like me could grow up dreaming of joining the circus too,” Swift said.

She ended the tribute with a deeply personal farewell.

“Dolly, I’ll think of you each step of the way.”

News of Parton’s death was confirmed earlier that day by her nephew, Bryan Seaver, who announced her passing in a video posted to Instagram. Representatives for Parton later told PEOPLE that the “I Will Always Love You” singer had died following what they described as a “brief battle with cancer.”

The emotional connection between Swift and Parton was underscored by one of the country star’s final social media appearances.

In an Instagram video posted on July 3, Parton personally thanked Swift and her husband, Travis Kelce, for donating $2 million to the Imagination Library.

“Taylor and Travis, it’s Dolly, and I was just told that you two were making a donation of $2 million to my Imagination Library,” Parton said in the video.

“I’m blown away and overjoyed with that gratitude.”
