Married at First Sight’s Michelle Le Reveals Hysterectomy at 34 and Shares Plans to Pursue Surrogacy With Cameron Mitchell

Married at First Sight star Michelle Le is opening up about a major and deeply personal development in her fertility journey, revealing that she underwent a hysterectomy earlier this year and is now preparing to explore surrogacy with husband Cameron Mitchell.

The 34-year-old reality star discussed the procedure in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE alongside Mitchell ahead of the Thursday, August 27 finale and reunion of season 20 of Married at First Sight.

Throughout the season, Le had spoken candidly about her hopes of becoming a mother and the medical challenges that could affect those plans. Viewers learned that she had previously frozen her eggs and that another surgery might eventually become necessary.

Now, Le has confirmed that the surgery ultimately resulted in a hysterectomy, meaning she will not be able to carry a pregnancy herself.

“I actually had the surgery back in May,” Le said. “I ended up needing a hysterectomy, so I was healing all through that month.”

She then explained the consequence of the procedure directly.

“So I can’t carry my own children.”

Despite the significant change in their plans for starting a family, Le said Mitchell remained supportive throughout her surgery and recovery.

“Cameron was really supportive through it all,” she said.

Rather than allowing the diagnosis and procedure to end their hopes of becoming parents, Le and Mitchell are now turning their attention to surrogacy.

“We’re going to look into surrogacy in the fall,” Le revealed.

The couple acknowledges that they are still at the beginning of understanding what the process involves.

“We have no idea what that process entails, but it’s definitely something that we’re interested in and we want to go for,” Le said. “So we’re excited to start that process.”

Cameron Says Michelle’s Fertility Challenges Never Changed His Feelings

Mitchell admitted that learning about Le’s fertility situation early in their relationship initially came as “a bit of a surprise.”

However, he stressed that it never caused him to reconsider their relationship.

“It was never something that made me second guess her… [or] us,” Mitchell told PEOPLE.

For him, the central goal of participating in Married at First Sight was finding a person with whom he could build a lasting relationship.

“I was more focused on finding love and finding my person,” he said.

Mitchell also made clear that he never believed there was only one acceptable path to parenthood.

“There’s obviously a lot of different ways, I guess less conventional ways, of having a family,” he explained.

For Mitchell, hearing Le’s story gave him an opportunity to understand her experiences and consider alternative ways they could eventually become parents.

The couple now hopes to move forward relatively soon.

“We’re looking into surrogacy, hopefully start the process within the next few months because, you know, it can be a longer process and we want to get started and try to have a kid,” Mitchell said.

Their decision represents an important next chapter for a couple whose relationship began under extremely unconventional circumstances.

They Knew Early That Their Marriage Could Last

Le and Mitchell met through season 20 of Married at First Sight, the reality series in which participants agree to marry someone selected for them by relationship experts before meeting their future spouse at the altar.

While such an arrangement can produce uncertainty and conflict, Mitchell said it did not take him very long to realize that he wanted his marriage to Le to continue.

After only “a couple weeks,” he felt confident about their future together.

“I was always certain I was going to say yes,” Mitchell recalled when discussing the period leading up to Decision Day.

“It was honestly an easy decision at that point, and I didn’t have any doubts at all.”

Le reached the same conclusion.

“We knew probably maybe four weeks in that we were going to say yes on Decision Day,” she said.

“So it was not a surprise for the two of us.”

Their mutual certainty helped distinguish their experience from some of the more turbulent relationships that can emerge from the Married at First Sight experiment.

Rather than reaching Decision Day unsure whether to remain married, Le and Mitchell had already decided that their relationship was something they wanted to continue building.

Building a Life Together After Filming

Since filming ended, the couple has continued working to combine their lives away from television cameras.

Their relationship has involved considerable travel between cities.

Le spent approximately six months living in Portland before temporarily returning to Seattle, where she has been preparing to sell her condo and complete the process of leaving the city.

The couple’s next home will be in Northern California.

Mitchell moved to the Bay Area in July, and Le said she expects to join him soon.

“I’ll be there in probably a few weeks,” she said.

For Le, the move will finally eliminate the geographical separation they have been navigating.

“So we’ll be done with this whole back-and-forth thing,” she explained.

The move represents another major step in integrating their lives following their unusual introduction and first year of marriage.

Mitchell described that year as energetic and adventurous.

“Our marriage is really fun. It’s full of adventure,” he said.

The pair has traveled extensively, including trips outside the United States, while also introducing and integrating their respective families.

“We’ve been able to do some traveling. We’ve gone out of the country,” Mitchell explained. “We’ve, you know, obviously integrated our families that are very close now.”

Even after approximately a year together, Mitchell says there is still much to learn about his wife.

“I’m having a blast really being with Michelle, but also still getting to know her and learning more about her because, you know, it has only been a year,” he said.

“So it’s been an amazing year.”

Why Michelle Turned to Married at First Sight

For Le, finding a stable relationship through such an unconventional experiment feels especially meaningful because of how discouraging her dating experiences had become before the show.

She said traditional dating apps had been particularly difficult.

“The dating apps were really tough,” Le recalled.

Living in the Pacific Northwest presented another challenge.

Le referenced the so-called “Seattle Freeze,” a term commonly used to describe the perceived difficulty of forming new social connections in the Seattle area.

“Being in the Pacific Northwest, especially Seattle, we have the Seattle Freeze, and so it’s really difficult to meet people out and about,” she said.

Le also felt that dating became increasingly challenging as she moved through her thirties.

“I’m in my 30s, and so the pool just gets smaller as you get older,” she explained.

The experience eventually became discouraging enough that she decided she needed another approach.

“And so it was really, really disheartening,” Le said. “And so that’s why I decided to get Married at First Sight, because I thought I needed help from some experts desperately.”

The gamble ultimately led her to Mitchell.

Looking Toward Parenthood

Now, rather than worrying about whether the matchmaking experiment would succeed, Le and Mitchell are focused on questions surrounding their future together — including where they will live and how they will build a family.

For Le, their story reinforces the idea that people should sometimes be willing to take unconventional chances when traditional approaches are not working.

“It feels, I mean, really amazing, really special,” she said.

“And it just really speaks towards, you should try new things, especially if you’re someone struggling in a relationship.”

She also believes their experience demonstrates that professional matchmaking can succeed when combined with genuine effort from the people involved.

“I think it really speaks towards how matchmaking can work,” Le said. “And a lot of therapy, too.”

Their next major challenge will be navigating surrogacy.

The hysterectomy Le underwent in May fundamentally changed how she and Mitchell will have to approach parenthood, but neither appears to view it as the end of their plans.

Instead, the couple intends to begin researching the process and moving forward in the coming months.

For Mitchell, the path they take matters less than building a family with the person he chose to remain married to.

And for Le, the support she received throughout surgery and recovery appears to have reinforced the partnership they developed during Married at First Sight.

As they prepare to move together to Northern California, explore surrogacy and continue building their marriage away from the cameras, Le and Mitchell are entering a new phase that neither could have fully anticipated when they first met at the altar.
