Kristen Bell Returns as Anna in New Behind-the-Scenes Look at Frozen 3 Ahead of 2027 Release

Kristen Bell is officially back in Arendelle — and she is giving fans an early glimpse at the making of Frozen 3 more than a year before the highly anticipated Disney sequel arrives in theaters.

On Wednesday, Aug. 12, Bell, 46, shared a series of behind-the-scenes photos on her Instagram Stories showing her arriving at Walt Disney Animation Studios in Burbank, California, as work continues on the third installment in the blockbuster Frozen franchise.

The actress, who has voiced Anna since the original film debuted in 2013, was not alone.

In one photo, Bell could be seen walking into the studio alongside her three-legged rescue dog, Frank.

Another image showed Frank posing in front of production artwork featuring Anna and her older sister Elsa, voiced by Idina Menzel.

Bell joked about bringing some extra help to the recording session.

“Accompanied by my temporary admin assistant,” she wrote.

The lighthearted post offered one of the clearest signs yet that recording and production on Frozen 3 are moving forward as Disney prepares to bring audiences back to the kingdom of Arendelle.

The Original Cast Is Returning

Bell will once again lead the film as Anna, the relentlessly optimistic and determined princess who became one of Disney’s most popular modern animated characters.

She will be joined by several familiar voices.

Idina Menzel, 55, is returning as Elsa, while Jonathan Groff will reprise his role as Kristoff, Anna’s husband.

Josh Gad, 45, is also returning as the lovable snowman Olaf.

Gad began recording material for the film earlier this year.

On Feb. 2, he posted a photograph from Disney Animation Studios alongside directors Jennifer Lee and Trent Corey and producer Christina Chen.

“3rd time is always the charm ☃️ Time to build another snowman,” Gad wrote.

His post confirmed that voice recording had already entered an active stage months before Bell shared her own studio photos.

For longtime fans, seeing Bell, Menzel, Groff and Gad reunite is significant.

The quartet has been central to the franchise since the first movie.

Their characters helped turn Frozen from another Disney animated release into a worldwide phenomenon.

A Franchise That Began in 2013

The original Frozen arrived in 2013 and became an enormous commercial and cultural success.

Inspired loosely by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen, the film centered on sisters Anna and Elsa and explored themes of fear, family, sacrifice and unconditional love.

The movie became particularly famous for its music.

“Let It Go,” performed by Menzel as Elsa, became one of Disney’s most recognizable songs of the 21st century.

The film’s success led to Frozen 2 in 2019.

The sequel expanded the mythology surrounding Elsa’s powers and the history of Arendelle, sending Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven beyond the kingdom into an enchanted forest.

By the end of the movie, the sisters had moved into dramatically different roles.

Anna became queen of Arendelle, while Elsa chose to remain connected to the magical world beyond the kingdom.

That conclusion created numerous possibilities for a third story.

Disney, however, has kept the actual plot of Frozen 3 tightly guarded.

Jennifer Lee Says the Story Surprised Her

Although specific story details have not been revealed, Jennifer Lee has previously indicated that the creative direction for the third movie impressed her.

Lee co-directed both previous Frozen films and served as chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios from 2018 to 2024.

Speaking to Variety in 2023, she said she had been spending time with the creative team developing the new story.

“I am blown away and I am so excited,” Lee said.

At the time, she explained that her exact role in the project had not yet been completely defined, though she remained closely involved.

That involvement has since become clearer.

Lee is serving as an executive producer and co-writer on Frozen 3.

She is also directing the film alongside Trent Corey.

Corey already has experience within the Frozen universe.

His previous credits include the animated short Once Upon a Snowman, which explored Olaf’s early adventures, as well as the Disney+ short Once Upon a Studio.

The pairing of Lee and Corey keeps the third film closely connected to the creative DNA of the previous installments while also bringing new leadership into the franchise.

Josh Gad Is Making Big Promises

While Disney has been careful about revealing plot details, Gad has already begun teasing what audiences can expect.

During a June appearance on Good Morning America, he described Frozen 3 in particularly enthusiastic terms.

“It’s the funniest of the three movies I’ve ever recorded,” Gad said.

He also promised major surprises.

“There’s some unbelievable stuff, unbelievable developments.”

Coming from the actor who voices Olaf — a character responsible for many of the franchise’s biggest comedic moments — the comment suggests that humor could play an especially important role in the upcoming movie.

It also raises questions about what those “developments” might involve.

The ending of Frozen 2 left the central characters in a very different place from where they began.

Anna is now ruling Arendelle.

Elsa has embraced a new purpose.

Kristoff and Anna are married.

Olaf continues to move between both sisters’ worlds.

A third film therefore has room to explore not only a new external threat or adventure but also how these relationships have changed.

For now, however, Disney is keeping those details secret.

The Oscar-Winning Songwriters Are Back Too

Another critical piece of the original Frozen formula is also returning.

Married songwriting duo Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez are once again involved in the franchise.

The pair wrote the songs for both previous films.

Their work on “Let It Go” earned them the Academy Award for Best Original Song, while Frozen 2 track “Into the Unknown” later received an Oscar nomination.

In March 2023, Anderson-Lopez revealed that she and her husband learned Disney was officially announcing a third film on the same day the news became public.

“They told us, the day of, and a little bit about what they’re thinking,” she told Collider.

Despite receiving only limited information, she said the initial ideas immediately interested them.

“It got us very excited.”

She added that the project still had to move through the lengthy Hollywood production process, but their enthusiasm was already high.

Given how central music has been to Frozen’s identity, the return of Anderson-Lopez and Lopez is significant.

Songs such as “Let It Go,” “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?,” “For the First Time in Forever,” “Into the Unknown” and “Show Yourself” helped define not only the movies but also the wider cultural phenomenon around them.

A third film will inevitably face enormous expectations to produce another memorable soundtrack.

Bell’s Return Marks Another Milestone

For Bell, stepping back into Anna’s world continues a role that has followed her for more than a decade.

Anna became beloved partly because she differed from the traditional Disney princess archetype.

She was awkward.

Impulsive.

Funny.

Emotionally direct.

And deeply loyal to Elsa.

Bell’s vocal performance became inseparable from those traits.

Her latest photos do not reveal dialogue, songs or story details.

But simply seeing her back inside Disney Animation Studios is meaningful for fans who have been waiting for concrete signs of production.

The addition of Frank made the update characteristically playful.

Rather than posting a formal production announcement, Bell presented the day almost like she had simply brought her dog to work.

That casual approach also reflects how familiar the role has become.

She first played Anna more than 13 years ago.

Frozen 4 Is Already Planned

Disney is not treating Frozen 3 as the end of the franchise.

In November 2023, then-Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed that Frozen 4 was also in development.

Disney has not explained exactly how closely the two films will be connected.

Frozen 3 is scheduled to arrive in theaters on Nov. 24, 2027.

That gives Disney more than a year to complete voice recording, animation, music, scoring and post-production.

Animated features often require long development timelines, particularly movies carrying expectations as high as those surrounding Frozen.

For now, Bell’s Instagram Stories offer only a small glimpse behind the curtain.

There are no major plot revelations.
