Kelly Ripa is opening up about the unexpected everyday habit that ultimately led to a painful gum graft surgery — and forced her away from Live with Kelly and Mark for roughly two weeks.
The longtime television host, 55, revealed that years of brushing her teeth too aggressively caused significant gum recession, eventually leaving her with no choice but to undergo a periodontal procedure she had already postponed for years.
Ripa discussed the surgery in the Wednesday, Aug. 12 episode of her Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast, which had been recorded before she underwent the operation.
During her conversation with comedian and Survival of the Thickest creator Michelle Buteau, Ripa explained both the reason for the procedure and why the recovery presented a particularly unusual challenge for someone whose career depends on talking.
When Buteau, 49, remarked that the surgery sounded painful, Ripa did not disagree.
“It is,” she said.
She then revealed one of the most difficult parts of her recovery plan.
Following the gum graft, Ripa said she would be unable to speak for approximately 10 days.
For a television personality who spends much of her professional life hosting a daily talk show and a podcast, the restriction was understandably daunting.
“We’re already managing my stress level for not being able to talk for ten days,” Ripa joked.
But the reason behind the surgery was surprisingly ordinary.
Ripa told Buteau that she is an “over-brusher.”
“I brush my teeth too much,” she explained. “It’s a good-bad habit.”
Although regular brushing is essential for dental health, brushing too hard or too frequently can place excessive stress on gum tissue.
In Ripa’s case, she said that habit contributed to recession in a specific area of her mouth.
“I’ve caused gum recession down here specifically,” she said, before joking about what doctors needed to do next: “They have gotta re-gum my gums.”
What a Gum Graft Involves
A gum graft, also known as gingival graft surgery, is commonly used to treat gums that have receded or become too thin.
The procedure typically involves taking healthy tissue — often from the roof of the patient’s mouth — and attaching it to an area where gum tissue has deteriorated.
Ripa described the procedure in straightforward terms, explaining that doctors would take “the skin off of the roof of your mouth” and graft it onto the affected gum area.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, gum graft surgery can help cover exposed tooth roots, reduce sensitivity and protect against additional gum recession.
Although it is a relatively established periodontal treatment, recovery can require patients to follow strict restrictions while the graft heals.
For Ripa, that included avoiding normal speaking for more than a week.
Her doctors also placed restrictions on what she could eat and how she could care for the surgical area.
She Had Delayed the Procedure for Years
During the podcast conversation, Buteau initially praised Ripa for taking care of her oral health.
Ripa quickly interrupted her.
“Before you praise me, I was supposed to do it five years ago,” she admitted.
The surgery, in other words, was not something doctors had suddenly recommended.
Ripa had apparently known for years that the gum recession needed treatment.
Eventually, however, delaying the procedure was no longer considered advisable.
According to Ripa, her doctor made the situation clear.
“Now, you don’t have the luxury of time,” she recalled being told.
That warning ultimately pushed her to move forward with the operation.
Her comments offer an important detail about why her absence from Live with Kelly and Mark lasted longer than viewers might normally expect from a dental procedure.
The surgery itself was only the beginning.
Healing required silence, dietary restrictions and careful protection of the grafted tissue.
Her Absence From Live
Ripa ultimately missed approximately two weeks of Live with Kelly and Mark while recovering.
Her extended absence began with the July 27 episode.
Her husband and co-host, Mark Consuelos, explained to viewers that Ripa was recovering from gum graft surgery.
Consuelos, also 55, was joined by Kevin Jonas as guest co-host that day.
He told the audience that Ripa “sends her love” while also acknowledging that the procedure had been genuinely painful.
Consuelos explained that he was trying to make sure his wife actually followed the doctor’s recovery instructions.
Among those instructions were eating only soft foods, avoiding straws and resisting the temptation to inspect or disturb the surgical site.
For Ripa, who has built a reputation around high energy and constant conversation, the requirement to remain quiet may have been one of the most difficult parts.
Consuelos said he was doing his best to keep her from breaking the rules.
He also provided viewers with a striking indication of how uncomfortable the procedure had been.
“Yeah, it’s painful,” he said.
He then noted that Ripa generally has an unusually high tolerance for dental discomfort.
According to Consuelos, she is known for undergoing some dental work without local anesthetic.
“When she goes into the dentist, she doesn’t use the novocaine,” he said.
“But this one hurts, so I know it’s bad.”
His remark underscored that the gum graft was considerably more difficult than an ordinary dental appointment.
A Rotation of Guest Hosts Steps In
Because Ripa needed significant time away from the program, Live brought in a rotating lineup of guest co-hosts to sit alongside Consuelos.
Buteau herself was among those who stepped into Ripa’s chair during the recovery period.
Other guest hosts included Kevin Jonas, Mila Kunis, Pamela Adlon, Scott Foley, Sarah Chalke, Jenna Dewan and Carrie Coon.
The temporary rotation allowed the show to continue while Ripa followed her doctor’s instructions away from the studio.
For regular viewers, her absence was conspicuous because Ripa has been one of the most consistent figures in daytime television for decades.
She became a permanent co-host of Live in 2001, initially joining Regis Philbin.
Over the years, the program evolved through several co-hosting combinations before Consuelos officially joined his wife as permanent co-host.
The pair now front Live with Kelly and Mark together.
That made Ripa’s temporary silence particularly unusual.
Talking is not merely part of her personality; it is central to her job.

The Irony of a Healthy Habit Gone Too Far
Perhaps the most unusual aspect of Ripa’s explanation is that the problem originated with something normally associated with good health.
Brushing your teeth is essential.
But Ripa’s experience illustrates that even a healthy routine can become damaging when performed excessively or too aggressively.
That is why she referred to over-brushing as a “good-bad habit.”
She was trying to take care of her teeth.
Instead, she gradually contributed to the deterioration of her gums.
The issue became serious enough that tissue had to be surgically replaced.
Her admission also reflects the self-deprecating style that has long characterized her public personality.
Rather than presenting the procedure in clinical terms alone, she joked that doctors needed to “re-gum” her gums and openly acknowledged that she had ignored the recommended treatment for years.
But underneath the humor was a legitimate health issue.
Her doctor had eventually reached the point of telling her that waiting was no longer an option.
Recovery Became a Family Affair
Consuelos’ comments on Live also revealed how closely he was involved in his wife’s recovery.
He was not simply covering for her professionally.
At home, he was trying to ensure she did not accidentally interfere with the healing process.
That included enforcing the soft-food diet and discouraging her from checking the graft.
The couple’s dynamic has frequently become part of the show since Consuelos joined as co-host, and Ripa’s surgery gave viewers another glimpse of their life away from the television desk.
This time, however, the stakes were more practical.
Successful gum graft recovery depends heavily on allowing the surgical site to heal undisturbed.
That meant Ripa needed to temporarily abandon habits that would normally be completely automatic — including extensive conversation.
Back After an Unusual Health Break
Ripa’s absence was not caused by a major illness or a television contract dispute.
Instead, it came down to years of brushing too aggressively and a dental procedure she had delayed until doctors told her she could wait no longer.
It may sound minor compared with some medical procedures, but Consuelos made clear that the recovery was genuinely painful.
And Ripa herself admitted before the operation that the prospect of being silent for 10 days was already causing stress.
The experience ultimately turned an everyday hygiene habit into an unexpectedly disruptive chapter in her television career.
Yet it also gave Ripa one more story to tell once she was finally able to talk again.
Her lesson is deceptively simple:
Sometimes even a good habit can go too far.
For Kelly Ripa, years of enthusiastic brushing eventually led to gum recession, surgery, nearly two weeks away from television — and one doctor’s warning that she had officially run out of time to keep putting it off.
