Jennifer Garner Says She ‘Panicked’ Financially After Ben Affleck Split and Feared Her Acting Career Could End

Jennifer Garner is reflecting on the financial uncertainty she experienced after the end of her marriage to Ben Affleck, revealing that she “panicked” when she realized how much she had stepped away from her acting career while raising their three children.

The 13 Going on 30 and Alias star discussed the difficult period during an appearance on the Aspire With Emma Grede podcast on Tuesday, explaining that the end of her marriage forced her to think seriously about her financial future in a way she had never done before.

Garner and Affleck share three children: Violet, 20, Seraphina, 17, and Samuel, 13. During the early years of motherhood, Garner deliberately reduced her acting workload so she could spend more time with her family.

However, after she and Affleck separated, Garner said she suddenly became aware that stepping away from Hollywood for extended periods had created a level of professional and financial vulnerability.

“I panicked when I was first out of my marriage and realized I had taken such a step back in my work,” Garner said on the podcast. “Suddenly I realized like I don’t know how long I’ll be able to work.”

For Garner, the concern was not simply about returning to acting. She was also thinking about the realities of an entertainment business that has historically provided fewer major opportunities to actresses as they grow older.

She acknowledged that longevity in Hollywood can be unpredictable, particularly for women, and that there was no guarantee she would continue earning the same amount of money from acting later in life.

“This isn’t a career that’s like, ‘Hey, you’re 60, you’re 55, you’re 43, come on, let’s pay you more than you’ve ever made,’” Garner explained.

The realization prompted her to reconsider how she approached both work and money.

“I was suddenly like, wait a minute, I have to take care of myself. I have to take care of these kids. So, what is it going to be?” she recalled.

The actress credited her longtime manager and business partner Nicole King with helping her develop a strategy for the next stage of her professional life.

Rather than relying entirely on Hollywood, Garner began focusing on building sources of income that could provide more stability and independence.

One of the most significant parts of that strategy became Once Upon a Farm, the organic food company Garner helped grow into a major business. The company produces refrigerated foods aimed primarily at babies and children and has become an increasingly important part of Garner’s professional identity outside acting.

While expanding the business, Garner said she also established clear boundaries around her work schedule.

The goal was to create a career that allowed her to continue earning money while still maintaining the flexibility she needed as a parent.

For Garner, building a business outside the entertainment industry also offered something Hollywood could not necessarily guarantee: a financial safety net that she controlled herself.

“Life is expensive, and you still have to kind of figure out how you’re going to live,” Garner said.

She emphasized that celebrity does not automatically mean permanent financial security.

“And just because you’re well known by people does not mean that there is some great living being provided for you,” she continued.

The experience fundamentally changed Garner’s attitude toward money.

She admitted that before the end of her marriage, she had never spent much time thinking about her financial position. Afterward, however, money became an immediate and practical concern.

“It became very serious to me really quickly as someone who had never given a lot of thought to money,” she explained. “Like, ‘Oh I need to be an earner here.’”

Garner and Affleck married in 2005 and remained together for approximately a decade before announcing their separation in 2015. Their divorce was finalized in 2018.

Over the years, Garner has spoken candidly about how the breakup affected both her personal life and her career.

She has previously described the divorce as a period of major “upheaval” for the family, particularly because the separation occurred while their children were still young.

Garner’s concerns about her career were also connected to the sacrifices she had made during those years.

Reflecting on pregnancy and motherhood, she explained that having a child could effectively remove an actress from professional life for a significant amount of time.

“You give up a year/year-and-a-half of performance while you are pregnant, having a baby, recovering,” Garner said.

With three children, those periods accumulated into substantial gaps in her acting career.

Garner had already established herself as one of Hollywood’s most recognizable actresses by then. She rose to prominence playing CIA officer Sydney Bristow on the television drama Alias, which ran from 2001 to 2006, before becoming a major movie star through projects including 13 Going on 30, Daredevil, Elektra and Juno.

But even an established career did not eliminate her concerns about returning to work after years of prioritizing motherhood.

Her comments highlight one of the more complicated realities faced by working parents in entertainment: stepping back can provide valuable time with children, but it can also make returning to the industry more difficult.

Today, Garner has managed to maintain both sides of her professional life.

She continues acting while remaining closely involved with Once Upon a Farm, effectively creating the diversified career she began envisioning during the uncertain years surrounding her divorce.

Her personal relationship with Affleck has also evolved considerably since their separation.

Although their marriage ended years ago, the former couple have developed a cordial co-parenting relationship centered on their three children.

Garner recently praised Affleck for supporting the family while she was filming her television project Five Star Weekend.

“He’s wonderful,” Garner told Entertainment Weekly in July. “He takes care of them. He’s a great partner in that way. And so that’s very freeing.”

The remark offered a markedly different picture from the fear and uncertainty Garner described experiencing immediately after their separation.

At the time, she was worried about whether she could rebuild her career, support herself financially and continue providing stability for their children. Years later, Garner says she and Affleck have found a functional partnership as co-parents that allows both of them to pursue their professional responsibilities.

Her recent work also demonstrates that Garner’s fears about disappearing from Hollywood have not materialized.

Alongside her entrepreneurial responsibilities, she continues taking prominent acting roles, including Five Star Weekend. Her ability to balance both careers has given her the financial independence she initially worried about after her marriage ended.

Looking back, Garner’s comments suggest that the divorce became a turning point not only in her personal life but also in the way she understood work, money and independence.

What began as a period of panic eventually pushed her to build a broader professional foundation — one that no longer depended exclusively on receiving the next Hollywood role.

For Garner, the lesson was straightforward but significant: fame itself was not financial security. She needed to become responsible for building that security herself, while continuing to raise her children and navigate an unpredictable acting industry.
