Hayden Panettiere Dies at 36: A Look Back at the Heroes Star’s Career, Personal Struggles and Legacy

Actress Hayden Panettiere, widely recognized for her performances in Heroes, Remember the Titans, Nashville and the Scream franchise, has died at the age of 36.

Panettiere died on Sunday, August 16, according to a statement shared by her representative on behalf of her father, Alan Panettiere. No official cause of death has yet been released.

“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden,” her father said in the statement.

He remembered his daughter as “an incredible light and a force of nature” who brought enormous love and happiness not only to those who personally knew her, but also to millions of people who followed her work on television and in film.

The actress’ death brings an abrupt end to a career that began when she was still a small child and eventually made her one of the most recognizable young stars of American television.

A Career That Began in Childhood

Born on August 21, 1989, Panettiere started working professionally at a remarkably young age.

Her acting career began in 1994, when she joined the ABC daytime soap opera One Life to Live. She continued working in television with CBS’ Guiding Light, first appearing in the series in 1996 and later returning from 1997 until 2000.

Panettiere soon expanded into film.

One of her earliest major roles came as the voice of Princess Dot in Pixar’s animated movie A Bug’s Life. She was only a child at the time, but the project introduced her to a much larger audience.

In 2000, she appeared in one of the movies that would remain closely associated with her career: Remember the Titans.

Panettiere played Sheryl Yoast, the football-obsessed daughter of assistant coach Bill Yoast, portrayed by Will Patton. The film became a popular sports drama and helped further establish Panettiere as a promising young performer.

Throughout the early 2000s, she continued appearing in major television productions and films, including Ally McBeal, Malcolm in the Middle, Tiger Cruise and Ice Princess.

Her career, however, entered an entirely different level in 2006.

International Fame With Heroes

That year, Panettiere was cast as Claire Bennet in NBC’s science-fiction drama Heroes.

Her character was a high school cheerleader who discovered that she possessed extraordinary regenerative abilities, allowing her body to heal from severe injuries.

The series became an international phenomenon, and Panettiere quickly emerged as one of its most recognizable stars.

Her character’s storyline and the show’s famous “Save the cheerleader, save the world” theme turned her into a major figure in 2000s pop culture.

Panettiere remained with Heroes until the original series concluded in 2010.

She then continued building her film career, appearing as Kirby Reed in Scream 4 in 2011. The character became a favorite among fans of the horror franchise, and more than a decade later Panettiere returned to the role in 2023’s Scream VI.

Between those appearances, she landed another defining television role.

From 2012 to 2018, Panettiere starred alongside Connie Britton in the musical drama Nashville. Across all six seasons, she portrayed country music star Juliette Barnes, a complicated character dealing with fame, relationships, motherhood and emotional instability.

The role gave Panettiere the opportunity to combine acting and music, another area she explored throughout her entertainment career.

After stepping away from acting for several years, Panettiere eventually returned with Scream VI. Her later projects included the 2024 thriller Amber Alert, 2025’s A Breed Apart and Sleepwalker, which became her final film role and was released in theaters in January.

Motherhood and a Difficult Custody Decision

Panettiere’s life away from the screen was frequently the subject of public attention.

In December 2014, she and her then-fiancé, former heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko, welcomed their daughter, Kaya Evdokia Klitschko.

Panettiere and Klitschko initially raised Kaya together. After the couple separated, however, Panettiere made the painful decision in 2018 to allow Klitschko to have full custody while Kaya continued living in Europe.

The decision became one of the most discussed aspects of Panettiere’s personal life.

Years later, she rejected claims that she had simply “given away” or abandoned her daughter. During an appearance on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast, Panettiere explained that the situation was far more complicated.

At the time the custody arrangement changed, she had been struggling with alcoholism, substance abuse and postpartum depression and was seeking treatment.

Despite living separately from her daughter, Panettiere remained in regular communication with Kaya before her death.

Her Battle With Addiction

In 2022, Panettiere publicly discussed the extent of her struggles with alcohol and opioids.

Speaking openly about addiction for the first time, she described how a life that appeared successful from the outside had gradually become overwhelmed by substance dependence and emotional difficulties.

“I was on top of the world, and I ruined it,” she said.

Panettiere explained that there were periods when she believed she had reached the lowest possible point, only to discover that her situation could deteriorate even further.

Recovery required her to confront uncomfortable truths about herself.

“I put a lot of work into myself, and I had to be willing to be incredibly honest,” she said.

Despite everything she had experienced, Panettiere said she did not regret even some of the most painful periods of her life because they had become part of her personal journey.

In what would become her final interview, she described herself as “a work in progress” and said she was continuing to take life one day at a time.

The Death of Her Brother

Another devastating chapter in Panettiere’s life came in 2023, when her younger brother, actor and artist Jansen Panettiere, died at the age of 28.

His death was attributed to complications involving an enlarged heart and an aortic valve condition.

The loss profoundly affected Hayden.

Speaking about Jansen in 2024, she said that because he was her only sibling, she had always felt responsible for protecting him.

“When I lost him, I felt like I lost half of my soul,” she said.

His death remained an important part of her emotional life in the years that followed.

A Memoir Filled With Personal Revelations

Earlier this year, Panettiere published her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning.

The book offered one of the most detailed accounts of her life, including her experiences growing up in Hollywood, her relationships, addiction, motherhood and the loss of her brother.

She also wrote about alleged encounters with powerful figures in the entertainment industry and the circumstances surrounding the decision for Kaya to primarily live with Klitschko.

Among the memoir’s most personal revelations was Panettiere’s decision to publicly identify herself as bisexual.

She also recounted being warned by a doctor that if she continued drinking heavily, her alcoholism could become fatal within several years.

The memoir presented a portrait of someone attempting to confront both the privileges and the darker consequences of spending most of her life in the public eye.

Panettiere had been working professionally for more than three decades by the time of her death.

From the child actor audiences first saw in daytime television to the indestructible cheerleader of Heroes, the ambitious country singer of Nashville and the returning fan favorite of the Scream franchise, her career stretched across multiple generations of television and film.

Her life also unfolded under extraordinary public scrutiny, particularly during her struggles with addiction, postpartum depression, motherhood and grief.

At the time her death was announced, the cause had not been made public.
