Cardi B Says Fan Complaints Make Her Want to ‘Take the Summer Off’ Instead of Releasing More Music

Cardi B has a message for fans demanding more songs, videos and promotion: complaining about her release schedule is not going to make her work faster. In fact, she says it makes her want to do the exact opposite.

During an X Spaces conversation on Tuesday, Aug. 11, the Grammy-winning rapper addressed criticism from listeners who have questioned the way she promotes her music and why certain songs receive more attention, visuals or music videos than others.

Cardi, 33, made it clear that pressure does not motivate her.

“When y’all complain, it doesn’t make me want to sit down. No, it makes me want to say, ‘I ain’t doing s—,’” she said. “How about that? That’s the type of person I am.”

The blunt response came as some fans continued pushing the rapper for more content following a busy period that included the release of her second studio album, a major North American arena tour and a new solo single.

But according to Cardi, audiences should not expect every song she releases to receive exactly the same creative treatment.

“Not everything is going to have the same aesthetic as the other ones,” she explained.

Cardi also acknowledged that she has recently stepped away from the studio.

“I know I have not been in the studio,” she said. “I have not been doing all that s— right now.”

For some artists, criticism from fans might inspire a return to work.

Cardi says it has the opposite effect.

When people start “complaining and talking s—,” she explained, her instinct is to stay in bed, disconnect from the pressure and spend more time with her family.

That choice comes after what has been one of the busiest stretches of her career.

Cardi took the album on the road with the Little Miss Drama Tour, her first full headlining arena tour.

The 35-date North American run began on Feb. 11 in Palm Desert, California, before concluding on April 18 in Atlanta.

A tour of that size meant months of rehearsals, travel, performances and promotional commitments.

By the time it ended, Cardi had completed another major milestone.

That workload helps explain why she is resistant to immediately returning to the studio simply because listeners want another release.

From her perspective, she has already been working.

The frustration appears to come from the feeling that audiences can quickly move on from one achievement and immediately demand the next.

Despite saying she has not recently been spending time in the studio, Cardi has not disappeared from music.

On July 31, she released the solo single “AH HA.”

The track once again put her confrontational style front and center, with Cardi directly addressing critics and detractors.

“AH HA” also gave her another significant chart achievement.

The song became Cardi’s 30th career top 10 on Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs chart.

It also extended a remarkable streak: Cardi has now placed at least one song inside the chart’s top 10 in each of the past 10 years.

That makes the complaints about inactivity particularly ironic.

Within less than a year, Cardi has released a full album, completed an arena tour and delivered another charting single.

Yet some fans still want more.

Her response is essentially that she refuses to let those expectations dictate her schedule.

Not Every Song Needs the Same Visual Treatment

Another part of Cardi’s frustration appears to involve fan expectations around promotion.

But Cardi’s latest comments suggest she does not view herself as being obligated to maintain a constant cycle of releases simply because the numbers remain strong.

She wants the ability to stop.

Cardi Is Planning to Enjoy Her Success

Her idea of taking time off does not necessarily mean hiding at home all summer.

Cardi has also made it clear that she intends to celebrate.

On Aug. 3, she revealed during an Instagram Live that she was considering organizing a private party in New York to mark the success of several of her biggest songs.

“I think I’m going to throw a party this week in New York,” she said.

She added that she and one of her friends were planning the event and that she wanted it to remain relatively exclusive.

The comment fits with her broader declaration that she intends to be “all the way outside” this summer.

In other words, Cardi is not withdrawing from public life.

She is simply trying to participate in it on her own terms.

Fans May Have to Be Patient

The relationship between Cardi B and her fan base has always been unusually direct.

Fans celebrate her achievements enthusiastically.

They also criticize her openly.

And Cardi frequently responds.

That dynamic can create tension, especially when expectations become focused on release dates and promotional schedules.

This time, Cardi is drawing a clear boundary.
