Veteran Malaysian drummer Raja Azreen Raja Talib has died at the age of 56 after collapsing onstage just two songs into a rock festival performance in Kuantan, Malaysia.

Raja Azreen was performing with his longtime band Meditasi at the Teruntum Rock Festival on Saturday, July 18, when he suddenly slumped over his drum kit during the second song of what was supposed to be a 10-song set.

According to reports from Malaysian outlets including Berita Harian and the New Straits Times, the drummer was quickly removed from the stage and taken for emergency medical treatment, but he never regained consciousness.

Meditasi frontman Bakaruddin Daud, better known as Burn, later recalled the shocking moment when he noticed his bandmate collapse.

Burn said he saw Raja Azreen slump over the drums while the group was performing and immediately rushed toward him.

“I rushed towards him, but I could sense that he was already gone,” Burn told Berita Harian, according to an English translation of his remarks.

The singer said he called out to Raja Azreen and tried to get a response, but the drummer did not react.

“I called out to him and tapped him, but there was no response,” Burn said.

The sudden medical emergency unfolded in full view of the audience, leaving concertgoers visibly alarmed.

“The fans were quite alarmed when they saw what was happening,” Burn recalled.

Band members and others at the event carried Raja Azreen backstage while emergency assistance was requested. According to Burn, an ambulance arrived at the Kuantan festival venue within minutes.

Raja Azreen was then transported to Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital.

His older brother, Raja Azman Raja Taib, later confirmed that Raja Azreen was pronounced dead shortly before 11 p.m. local time.

“He was given respiratory assistance, but he did not regain consciousness or respond after the collapse,” Raja Azman told Berita Harian.

Malaysian media reported that the drummer’s death was connected to heart complications.

The tragedy came as a major shock to his bandmates because, according to Burn, Raja Azreen had not appeared visibly ill during rehearsals leading up to the festival.

Burn said the drummer had actually seemed happy and excited to reunite with longtime friends.

“He was really happy to meet up with friends,” the singer said. “He didn’t appear sad or unwell.”

That made the sudden collapse even more difficult for the members of Meditasi to process.

Burn said he was “truly shocked and deeply saddened” by the loss of a musician he had known and performed alongside for decades.

However, Raja Azreen had experienced health problems in the months before his death.

Both his brother and his bandmate said that he had recently been diagnosed with diabetes.

His brother also revealed that Raja Azreen had been hospitalized in June because of heart-related problems.

According to Raja Azman, the drummer had required hospital treatment twice.

“He was hospitalized twice; the first stay lasted two to three weeks before he was admitted again,” Raja Azman said.

Although Raja Azreen eventually recovered enough to resume some of his normal activities, his brother suggested that physical exhaustion may have contributed to his final medical emergency.

On the same day as the Teruntum Rock Festival, Raja Azreen had reportedly participated in a BMX competition before traveling directly to the music event.

Raja Azman said it was possible that the demanding schedule placed too much strain on his brother’s heart.

“It is possible that extreme fatigue took a toll,” he said.

Raja Azreen had a deep interest in cycling in addition to music.

His brother said the drummer had previously operated a bicycle shop and maintained a passion for the sport for years.

After his health appeared to improve, Raja Azreen had reportedly begun participating in BMX events again.

That meant that on the day of his death, he had already been physically active before preparing for the festival performance with Meditasi.

The combination of his recent medical history and the demanding day has led his family to consider fatigue as one possible contributing factor, although the reported cause of death remained related to heart complications.

Raja Azreen was best known for his work with Meditasi, a Malaysian rock band that first became active during the late 1980s.

The group’s name comes from a Malay word meaning “Meditation.”

Meditasi became part of Malaysia’s rock scene during the 1980s and 1990s before eventually disbanding.

Years later, the musicians reunited in 2015, allowing fans to once again hear songs from one of the veteran groups associated with that period of Malaysian rock.

The reunion also gave Raja Azreen the opportunity to perform again with musicians who had been part of his life for decades.

The band continues to maintain a significant audience, with more than 46,000 monthly listeners on Spotify at the time of the reports.

That decision gives the group a way to honor a drummer who had been part of its identity since its early years.
